Greetings and glad tidings to you during this joyous time of year -'tis the season to be jolly! This issue is dedicated to the holidays. The
coming weeks are filled with religious celebrations, family get-togethers and the sharing of presents all shrouded in the spirit of
giving. In a county as big and diverse as Polk, there are sure to be many celebrating Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Years Day and Three Kings Day.

Each of us has special traditions that add meaning to this season and that cause us to draw closer to our loved ones. In my home, as a
young family living away from most extended family, we're still establishing our own Christmas traditions. However, much like those highlighted in this edition, we have those passed to us from our parents, which we cherish and strive to uphold.

One such tradition, is remembering those less fortunate and it is important to remember there are many in Polk County wondering where their next meal will come from. The Salvation Army, VISTE, other food banks and many shelters across the area are seeking your help to tend to the needs of others. It's time to dig within, uncover that compassionate self and contribute to those less fortunate.

There are other, shall I say, less enamoring traditions though. I work hard to overcome apathy when it comes to putting lights up around the outside of the house. Call me a scrooge, but untangling the cords, the process of attaching to the house and bushes, not to mention the prospects of reversing it all in several
short weeks, simply doesn't have a lot of appeal. Please don't misunderstand me, I enjoy looking at the exuberant light displays, those of our neighbors and others around the community, because it is an art in and of itself. However, the
act of putting them up and taking them down, is simply not one I look forward too with great enthusiasm.

In closing, be sure to take advantage of the many things to see and do right here in Polk County. From enjoying a "staycation" at one of the many remarkable Polk County bed and breakfasts or hotels to venturing off the beaten
path to find a quaint local merchant for your holiday gifts, to enjoying one of the many arts and culture offerings, be sure to explore Polk County this holiday season.
